We were delighted to visit Coláiste Muire Máthair in Galway City on the 30th April to name them school a Champion School of Sanctuary, our second post primary school in Galway. The monitoring team on the day included Sive O’Connor Schools of Sanctuary Coordinator, Aidan Harte and Roisín Birch from University of Galway, Paul Fallon from from the LAIT at Galway City Council, Tara Broderick from Galway Educate Together Secondary School, and Cathy Joyce from Galway City Partnership, who were all genuinely impressed with the schools presentation. It highlighted the tremendous effort and dedication of the Schools of Sanctuary committee, guided by the outstanding leadership of Ms. Maura Geoghegan. Over the past few years, the school has worked tirelessly to ensure it truly embodies a welcoming sanctuary for the diverse student body.
The monitoring process included a series of presentations by CMM students, showcasing cultural music and dance along with a beautiful rendition of Grace by first-year student Amy O’Donovan. The Home Economics Department, under the expert guidance of Ms. Caoimhe Dowling, went above and beyond by preparing a variety of delicious, homemade treats inspired by the cuisines of many of the countries represented by our student bakers.
The school principal, Ms. Betty Hernon, spoke about the unity in the school and how it is proud to embrace the diverse cultural backgrounds of the schools community. Ms. Claire McLaughlin provided a comprehensive overview of the support for neurodiverse students and the work of the Sonas ASD units, while Ms. Fionnula MacAonghusa shared her passion for the impactful work done by the Behaviour for Learning initiative in supporting students with challenges. We were also pleased to have Ms. Marta Wilczynsko join the celebration as a representative of the Parents’ and Guardians’ Association.
