Welcome Ballinlough National School

Ballinlough National School has proudly become the first primary school in County Roscommon to be named a Champion School of Sanctuary. This remarkable achievement reflects the school’s unwavering commitment to fostering inclusivity and supporting those seeking sanctuary within the community. With students from a variety of backgrounds and nationalities, Ballinlough NS is a place where diversity is celebrated, and every child is encouraged to achieve their full potential. The school buzzes with energy and positivity, with both staff and students working together in a nurturing, supportive environment.

On March 31st, a monitoring team from Schools of Sanctuary visited the school to assess its progress. The team included Sive O’Connor (Schools of Sanctuary Coordinator), Martina Peyton (Champion Teacher from St. Nathy’s, Ballaghadereen), along with two Sanctuary Committee students, Rispa Mwangi (Sanctuary Ambassador) and Sylvia Murphy (Manager of the Local Playschool and Afterschool Club).

The pupils and staff greeted the team with a vibrant display of music, dance, and presentations. Senior students shared heartfelt stories about their journeys to Ballinlough from countries like Ukraine, Latvia, and Brazil, highlighting their positive experiences at the school. Other students spoke about their transitions from different regions of Ireland. Former pupils also took part in the event through video messages.

The school’s motto, “A small school with big ideas,” was clearly evident to the monitoring team. We are incredibly proud to have Ballinlough NS as part of the Champion School network.
