The school’s Diversity Committee shared their journey with the Schools of Sanctuary initiative, highlighting work across the Learn, Action, Share framework. Students spoke passionately about projects in Numeracy, Geography, CSPE, EAL, and creative initiatives such as a student-led “Learning Ukrainian” video. The school also shared strong links with other initiatives including Yellow Flag, Show Racism the Red Card, Belong To, and Bí Cineálta, demonstrating their commitment to inclusion and equality.
Throughout the day, students spoke with pride about their identities, cultures, and traditions. They shared personal stories and creative work, including poems and reflections, showing insight into both visible and hidden challenges faced by students in the school.
During a student-led tour of the school, we explored key spaces including the interfaith prayer room, sensory room, and assembly hall. Students guided us through vibrant displays celebrating global cultures, school values, and inclusion. Highlights included the School of Sanctuary and anti-racism wall, murals by local artists, the Diversity Committee’s first-ever Principal’s Award, and multilingual policy displays. The school’s motto of Care, Courage, Community was evident throughout.
The monitoring team had the opportunity to engage with students in interactive discussions, asking about inclusion, safety, and their understanding of migration and global issues. Students were open, reflective, and confident, showing how valued and supported they feel in their school community. Ideas for the future included ways to involve the wider school in Diversity Committee work and collaborate with other societies, such as debating and choir.
The visit concluded with discussions with teachers and the principal, reflecting on the school’s journey with Schools of Sanctuary. It was clear that St. Mary’s College has created an inclusive, supportive, and welcoming environment, where students can freely express themselves, explore global issues, and celebrate their cultures.
St. Mary’s College continues to be a shining example of what a School of Sanctuary can achieve, and the dedication of students, staff, and leadership to creating a culture of belonging was evident throughout the day.
